Prof. Przemysław Data z Katedry Fizykochemii i Technologii Polimerów Politechniki Śląskiej prowadzi nowatorskie badania nad technologią OLED, która niebawem wyprze całkowicie popularną dotychczas technologię nieorganicznych urządzeń LED
Głównym celem projektu jest stworzenie tanich źródeł oświetlenia OLED. Największym wyzwaniem w przypadku tej technologii są niezwykle wysokie koszty takich produktów dyktowane ich niestabilnością oraz faktem, że używanie tego typu oświetlenia generuje dużą ilość energii cieplnej. O ile nieorganiczne diody LED są odporne na temperaturę, to organiczne – niestety nie, co wywołuje ich szybką degradację. Aby rozwiązać ten problem, naukowcy z zespołu prof. Przemysława Daty opracowują bardziej wydajne emitery, aby straty energii w postaci ciepła były mniejsze, oraz implementują do wnętrza OLED-ów aktywne organiczne układy chłodzące. Dzięki temu można błyskawicznie zmniejszyć ilość wydzielanego ciepła, a ponadto sam zespół chłodzący będzie skonstruowany z tych samych elementów co dioda organiczna. Zaowocuje to z jednej strony oszczędnością podczas procesu wytwarzania, z drugiej – umożliwieniem regulacji temperatury.
– Syntezujemy nowe emitery TADF i RTP, tak aby zrozumieć relację między tymi dwoma mechanizmami emisji, ponieważ są one współzawodniczące, a zatem powinny wzajemnie się wykluczać. My tymczasem potrafimy stworzyć takie cząsteczki, które generują oba typy emisji. To pozwoli rozwiązać problem z organicznym oświetleniem, które będzie elastyczne, cieńsze i tańsze, a co najważniejsze – lepiej odwzoruje światło białe z mniejszą szkodliwością dla wzroku – wyjaśnia prof. Przemysław Data.
Do tej pory udało się uzyskać emitery RTP, których emisja jest kilka rzędów szybsza niż w typowych emiterach. Ma to olbrzymie znaczenie, ponieważ przy zastosowaniu emiterów w diodach luminescencyjnych emisja nie może być długożyjąca, z uwagi na wydajność diody. Naukowcom udało się opracować emitery RTP, które nie zawierają metali ciężkich. Przełożyli wyniki swoich prac na diody elektroluminescencyjne, wykonali już serię związków i diod elektroluminescencyjncyh, które na bazie tej emisji w fosforescencji wykazują znacząco wyższą wydajność niż obecne materiały opisane w literaturze.
Prof. Przemysław Data mocno akcentuje też pragnienie stworzenia warunków do nauki o ogniwach optoelektronicznych, tak aby przygotowywać studentów pod kątem działalności wdrożeniowej z zakresu elektroniki organicznej i nauczyć ich, w jaki sposób przygotować takie ogniwa samodzielnie. W związku z tym naukowiec już myśli o stworzeniu oddzielnego kompleksu dydaktyczno-laboratoryjnego dedykowanego badaniom nad materiałami przyszłości.
Równie wiele uwagi profesor poświęca również Sieci Naukowo-Badawczej Excilight, a zatem zaimplementowaniu emiterów ekscypleksowych do diod elektroluminescencyjnych. Emitery ekscypleksowe były uważane niegdyś za czynnik zmniejszający wydajność organicznych diod elektroluminescencyjncyh (OLED).
– Jak się okazało, w koncepcji tej brakowało jedynie odpowiedniego podejścia i to właśnie nam udało się wykazać, że można wyprodukować niezwykle efektywne diody elektroluminescencyjne przy jednoczesnym wykorzystaniu emiterów ekscypleksowych. Ekscypleks to materiał heterodimeryczny, który jest formowany w stanie wzbudzonym, zaś jego istnienie jest generowane poprzez zestawienie dwóch materiałów o różnej charakterystyce donorowo-akceptorowej. Gdy dochodzi do ich połączenia, właściwości samego układu ekscypleksowego są odmienne od materiałów składowych, można zatem cechy emiterów ekscypleksowych modyfikować w dowolny sposób – dodaje prof. Przemysław Data. Bezpośrednimi beneficjentami opracowywanej technologii są wszystkie nowatorskie aspekty elektroniki, oświetlenia, elektroniki ubieralnej czy też po prostu giętkiej. Przyszłością jest tu możliwość instalowania chociażby czujników do mierzenia ciśnienia czy temperatury w odzieży, jak również zastosowanie tego typu emiterów pod kątem wykorzystywania energii wytwarzanej przez człowieka – np. użycia wytwarzanego przez nas ciepła do ładowania sprzętów, których używamy.
